The Transformation
I want my students to connect physics concepts to real-world ideas. Students should be able to not only know the main ideas of centripetal force and acceleration but also their roles in society. We often take things for granted and do not realize what makes the world go ‘round. I want to transform my classroom in two ways. First, I would want to change the dynamic of my classroom from a textbook and outline style to one that poses a big question to students that they then go on to solve. The way I would like to go about doing this is by having students first watch a video without explanation and then go into detail as to how/why certain events in the video occur. Then, they will proceed to learn about the unit in a similar fashion as before but at the end of the unit they are going to use an online simulation at www.phet.colorado.edu and create a short-video to demonstrate their understanding and how it applies to their lives outside of the classroom. This focuses on the facet of interpretation because students are going to be discussing a complex problem and how it applies to them outside of the classroom instead of another set of definitions. The videos can be either a screencast or filming of each other demonstrating the different physics principles discussed within the unit. My assessments will be based on two parts. First is based off of their video and second will be in the typical test assessment form of a test.
